To start driving in North Dakota, you’ll need to pass a written knowledge exam. The written test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions based on the 2021 North Dakota Driver’s Guide and you’ll need to correctly answer a minimum of 20 of the 25 questions to pass. If you’re 14 or 15, you may take the written exam if you’ve completed a driver’s education course and you will then be required to hold your permit for a year before you apply for your license. If you’re between 16 and 18, you’ll only need to hold your permit for six months. The written knowledge test can be taken at your local DOT office. Be sure to bring a $5 testing fee, $15 permit fee, proof of identity, your social security number, a sponsor’s signature if you’re under 18, and proof of residence. You’ll also be required to take a standard eye exam. When you’re ready to take your road test, it will be an additional $5 fee. If you’re not able to pass your written test on the first try, you may come back as early as the next day to retest. Use this DOT practice test to help you study and pass your knowledge exam on the first attempt.

If you only study the official manual, your chances of passing the written knowledge test are only about 49 percent. The guide they give you at the DMV isn’t written to promote rapid learning. No matter how smart you are, it has a way to make you feel dumb: there are way too many things to remember all at once. How do you even know what you'll be tested on?
